On June 18 the documentary “Falcons of Freedom” by director Robert Wachowiak was screened at the Residence of the Ambassador of Poland in Washington, DC.

“The film honors the role of America’s Polonia community in restoring Poland’s independence in 1918 and tells an interesting story of young Americans searching for and discovering their roots,” Ambassador Piotr Wilczek said in his remarks opening the screening. The event was also joined by Leonard Baldyga, a retired US diplomat and leading member of the Polonia community who was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland in 1994. His career included work at American diplomatic posts in Poznań and Warsaw. Leonard Baldyga presented the personal story of his father Stanisław Baldyga, an American “Falcon” from Chicago who joined General Haller’s Blue Army.

The screening was organized as part of the eighth Visegrad Four Film Festival. Every year in the spring the embassies of Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia in Washington, DC present fiction or documentary films with a common theme. This year’s theme was “Freedom.”
