In her statement on January 26, on behalf of all Member States the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini urgently called on Mr. Nicolás Maduro to hold free, transparent and credible presidential elections.

The statement indicated that in the absence of an announcement on the organization of democratic elections over the next days, the EU would take further actions, including on the issue of recognizing the country´s leadership, in line with article 233 of the Venezuelan constitution.

In view of Nicolás Maduro’s failure to call early presidential elections, Poland acknowledges Mr. Juan Guaidó, President of the democratically elected National Assembly, as interim President of Venezuela with the responsibility to call free, fair and democratic presidential elections.

We reaffirm our support for the National Assembly and its President. We also reiterate the position of the EU that the fundamental freedoms of the Venezuelan people must be respected and any actions undermining the democratic mandate of the National Assembly should be avoided.
